Filmmaking for Kids

Description

Our filmmakers learn to write, shoot, direct, act, and edit in their own short films and skits in this in-person class. Each week, students will either be writing a new movie, filming one, or editing the previous one. We will cycle through the roles of writer, director, cinematographer, actor, and editor so every kid gets a chance to do every job. - We'll start with the science of storytelling, and how to construct a strong script with a beginning, middle, and end, and the conflict that runs throughout. - Students will learn how to use the camera, and choose the right angles and shots to meet their vision. - We'll need actors! The kids will have multiple opportunities to act in the films, and learn how to "act for the camera," including matching shots and finding their mark. - Lastly, the students will edit their mini movies, learning how to pick "takes" and adjust the tempo of the film using well-timed cuts. The semester will culminate in a screening of our films for family members and friends on the final class. This class is geared toward kids age 10-14. Any child who can work within the general age level of the group is welcome to join. Caroline Gordon-Elliott is an experienced filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor who has taught adults and kids in New York and Los Angeles.
